The Mermaids have played at Gala Dinners, Christmas Functions, Fundraiser Balls, Festivals around New Zealand from Russell to Invercargill, Palmerston North to Nelson to New Plymouth and everywhere in between.
A musical act that excells in dance music - with music from every era - plus plenty to look at, with gorgeous costumes - coupled with fun & spontaneous onstage personalities. Its all about the dance floor.
Respecting older dance traditions the band can perform songs in style of Mambo, Rhumba, Waltz, Salsa, Cha Cha, for the first set, if requested. Generally sets cover pop, disco, R & B, Rock and techno. They also include songs from the field of Burlesque, which can be performed in conjunction with male dancers.
Joe originally gained national recognition as part of female recording group "TrueBliss", the very first made for television pop experiment, which happened in New Zealand 1996-7, the forerunner to Idol and many more such concepts. Joe was one of five female singers chosen from among 600 hopefuls at the "Popstars" auditions. She additionally won "Pop's Ultimate Star", a "best of Idol" TV singing competition in 2007 on TV2, beating Australian and NZ Idol winners.
Her personality captivates the public, who follow her with great interest at all her singing engagements with the band. Glamorous and outgoing, she is also the girl next door - with major X Factor. Joe is also an announcer and DJ on More FM.
Vocalist Pauline Berry's background in music goes back to residencies as a nightclub singer in the mid and late 1980's, then onto rock lineups in the 1990s prior to forming The Mermaids in 1997 with. She has sung on hundreds of radio and TV jingles during the 80s and 90s. Additionally she has managed bands since 1988, organized and handled tours and festivals during the 90s and up to the present time.
Singer and Songwriter Amber Claire is a recording artist who had a gold album "Love and Such" and a Top 10 single in 2003 with "At 17", which peaked at No.6. Amber then went on to record a second album with Sony in 2004, "The Great Escape", with a track being included in an American movie in 2014, "Baggage Claim". As a songwriter herself, both albums included her own compositions.
Amber has performed as support artist to Jamie Cullum, Sarah McLachlan and Josh Kelly and has a Masters Degree in Fine Arts.
"The Mermaids Dance Band" keyboard player and musical director is Stuart Pearce. His areas of interest and expertise know no bounds - having worked successfully in genres as varied as rock, country, pop, new wave, blues, salsa, merengue, hip-hop and techno. As a long serving "In-house" music arranger/producer at top NZ recording studios Mandrill, York Street and Greenstone Music Karekare, he has been the driving force behind several No.1 NZ hits across a variety of genres.
Stu has recently been inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame, as a member of the legendary Kiwi band "Hello Sailor".
Stu produces all the music for "The Mermaids". Combined with the band's modern full range sound system, Stu's multi-faceted keyboard playing and the amazingly tight live vocals from Joe, Pauline & Amber, this band sounds fantastic on every level.
