What to look for when you want to join an actors agent, fashion modelling agency or talent agent
Help and advice for actors, models, dancers and singers new to the Film and Television industry in Australia and New Zealand.
What to look for
Looking for an agent you can work with to build your career is an important choice. There are many charlatans out there who will be keen to put you on their books. You need to find an agent who has
-
a good reputation ask other performers about their experiences or opinions
-
high profile if you were a client or overseas casting director visiting town looking for talent to use for your job, is this agency easy to find in industry directories and publications or would they miss out on work because of a low profile?
-
An established office temporary surroundings may be grounds for suspicion
-
People on their books you recognise – unless they’re an extras agency you should be able to recognise local talent on their books from television commercials and shows you’ve seen. Modelling agencies have "comp cards" of all their models lining the walls of the office usually showing a photo and basic specs such as height, hair and eye colour. For acting and voice over agencies you need to check industry directories to see if you recognise anyone. Voice over agents have CDs of their voices and many agencies have their own websites.
-
Professional manner if you contact them or visit them, do they treat you in a professional manner? Are they well presented? Dont forget you will be their client basic courtesy and an obvious knowledge of the industry will build your confidence in them.
-
In Australia, they must hold a licence under the Private Employment Agents Act. Do ask to see their license or read it on their wall. Do not deal with them if they are not licensed.
NOTE: Dont always judge how busy an office is by the number of calls that come in while you visit. The industry is notorious for having the phone calls stop altogether and then all come in at once!
